ORID

Here is a summary of the ORID focused conversation method, as described in Change Management for Sustainable Development.

ORID was developed by the fabulous people at ICA, whose training courses I heartily recommend.

Objective

  • What happened?

This should be confined to the facts – interpretation comes later. What did I see, touch, hear, smell, taste? This can include specific feedback that people gave. What did I do (the observable behaviour, rather than its impact or intention)?

Reflective

  • What emotions did I feel?

Interpretive

  • How can I interpret that?

What was really going on? What was good, helpful, effective or generated insights? What got in the way of progress?

Decisional

  • What should I do differently (or more of) next time?
